Lunar Eclipse Data Sonification

Thanks to an award from Help Musicians UK’s Fusion Fund, I have been working with ‘The Engineer’ to realise the musical potential of NASA’s dataset of Lunar Eclipses.

In honour of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon Landing, here is an early proof-of-concept excerpt of lunar sonification. In this clip, information relating to the lat/long position of the moon in relation to earth, the time of day of each event, and the duration form the main harmonic elements.

The work will continue to refine the software, with a view to constraining information within defined musical keys in order to facilitate improvisation between musicians and data.

I’ll also be publishing documentation around the software development later in the year.
